In Beaumont
Honestly, Beaumont is quiet this weekend. There is no City-run event on the calendar between tonight and Sunday.
What matters in Beaumont this week is practical rather than social: the BSRC Aquatic Centre closed yesterday for annual maintenance and stays closed until October 1, and the City has just published a significant change to what goes in your blue bag starting October 1. Both are in the sections below.

In Devon
Devon Historical Society museum, Friday afternoon. 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the 1949 Building near Robina Baker School. Worth flagging: the season is nearly over. Friday hours run through September 18 and Thursday hours through September 17, so this is one of the last two Friday afternoons to get in. Details

Worth the Drive
Oldstoberfest, tonight and tomorrow
Olds Regional Exhibition Grounds. Doors 4:30 p.m., rodeo 6:00 p.m. both nights.
Billed as the world's only Bavarian rodeo, and that is not a stretch. Rodeo Canada-sanctioned pro rodeo at 6:00 p.m., an outdoor concert at 8:30 p.m., then the Bier Garten with live bands from 9:30 p.m. One ticket covers all three.
Tonight is Epic Eagles, an Eagles tribute act. Saturday is Brandon Wisham, fresh off the Opry.
Tickets are roughly $48 for a single night or $91 for the weekend, both including fees, and the festival says gate sales are addressed in its FAQ if you are deciding last minute.
The catch is the drive. Olds sits about two hours south of us on the QEII, so this is a road trip and a hotel, not a there-and-back evening. If you are going tonight you are already late, so tomorrow is the realistic option. Details and tickets
Purple City Music Festival, downtown Edmonton
Friday to Sunday.
More than 125 artists across nine stages in six downtown venues, all within a two-block radius: the Starlite Room, The Temple, The Y Afterhours, Freemasons Hall, DECL and McDougall United Church. It is an all-ages festival focused on new underground music.
The useful part for families: there is free daytime programming, including a block party. Evening shows are individually ticketed starting around $25 plus fees. Check the lineup before you commit, because the venues are small and the good ones sell out. Festival info

Saturday and Sunday, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park.
Food, music and culture down on the river valley. An easy Saturday afternoon if the weather holds.
Strathearn Art Walk and Music Festival
Friday to Sunday, Strathearn Park.
Artists, makers and live music in one of Edmonton's prettiest older neighbourhoods. Free to wander.
Movies with a live orchestra at the Jubilee
Saturday 1:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 p.m., Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
The Two Towers in Concert on Saturday and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in Concert on Sunday. The full film on screen with the score played live. A good one for older kids.

The days are getting cooler (hmmm… did we even have summer?) and Jamie from Rig Hand Craft Distillery is generously bringing Fall Flavour-ites guaranteed to warm us from the inside out. In addition to five tastings, food, fun and a ‘spirited’ auction are also included for the reasonable price of $40! The funds raised will go towards supporting our Reading Buddies program at local elementary schools, community activities and our partner: the 50+ Club.

Leduc passed 40,000 residents
The city crossed the mark earlier this summer. Provincial data puts five-year growth at roughly 17.1 per cent, about 6,000 people, making Leduc one of the fastest-growing mid-sized cities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. Mayor Lars Hansen called it an exciting milestone. Not all one direction: residents have raised infrastructure concerns, and Black Gold School Division enrollment growth has slowed sharply, adding just 97 students for 2026-2027 against 395 in 2024 and 216 in 2023.
Leduc County cracks down on two rural roads
Protective Services ramped up patrols on Township Road 490 and Range Road 263. Officers issued 515 tickets in the first half of 2026, 281 per cent of the total for all of 2025, across 313 patrols. Director Tylor Bennett says most drivers charged are not from Leduc County, which he reads as local habits improving while people passing through do not. One driver was clocked at 146 km/h in a posted 90 zone and given a mandatory court appearance.

Your blue bag is about to accept a lot more
From Oct 1, Beaumont residents can put glass containers, foam packaging including clean meat trays and takeout containers, flexible plastics like bread bags, chip bags and bubble wrap, paper laminates like disposable coffee cups, and empty aerosol containers into curbside recycling. No added cost, same GFL schedule, and no more separate trips to the Leduc and District Waste Management Facility for glass and Styrofoam. Part of Alberta's move to single-stream recycling under the Extended Producer Responsibility program.
Shelter in place lifted after crossbow arrest
Beaumont RCMP issued a shelter in place shortly after 8:00 PM on Monday Sept 7 after residents reported someone armed with a crossbow near 46 Avenue and 38 Street. A suspect was in custody a short time later and police confirmed no further danger to the public. The suspect has not been named and charges had not been released at publication.
