School is back, the patios are winding down, and the fall event calendar just opened up. Between our three towns and a 30-minute drive into Edmonton, there is something on almost every night for the rest of the month. Some of it costs real money. A surprising amount of it is free.

Here is what is worth your time, sorted by how far you have to drive

Saturday, September 12. First post 4:45 p.m.

The biggest race day of the year at Century Mile, and this one is a milestone: the 30th running of the Fall Classic, and closing day of the 2026 thoroughbred and quarter horse meet. Seven Alberta-bred stakes races with $420,000 in purses, plus the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity and Derby.

It is built as a family day, not just a racing day. There is face painting, glitter tattoos and balloon artists for the kids, an Alberta Made Market with more than 30 local businesses, and a new Alberta Heritage Series whisky showcase where guests vote on a limited-edition release.

Also at Century Mile: the meet switches to live standardbred racing on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26, 6:35 p.m. post time both nights.

Saturday, September 12 to Sunday, September 13. 49 Promenade (49 Street).

Competition barbecue, local vendors and live entertainment take over downtown Leduc for the weekend. The City has not posted an hourly schedule, so watch the festival's own page for set times.

The ticketed kickoff is the night before: the Pitmasters Dinner at Leduc Brewing Company, Friday, September 11, 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., 4901 50 Avenue. Tuesday, September 15, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. St. George's Anglican Church, 1 St. Clair Street. Free.

A general knowledge quiz with categories running from Canada and Science to Sports and Games and Entertainment. Come solo or bring a team. Snacks are provided and the prizes come from local Devon merchants. No cost to enter.

Both towns run theirs the same morning, so pick one.

Leduc: Telford House, 4907 46 Street. Registration 10:00 a.m., run starts 11:00 a.m., event runs to 2:00 p.m. Run, walk, bike or blade, and the route is dog-friendly. Stay after for a charity BBQ and live entertainment on site.

Fall hockey is back. This is a week of high-level U18AA evaluation games at the LRC, and it is the one local sporting event on this list you can walk into on a weeknight without planning ahead. Good hockey, no ticket queue. Event listing

The Take Cover Tour hits Commonwealth with Queens of the Stone Age and Mannequin Pussy opening. A stadium show on a Thursday means a late night, so plan the drive home or the ride share now. Parking restrictions around the stadium start two hours before showtime. Tickets

Same night, other end of downtown. If country is more your speed than post-grunge, this is the one. Two major shows in the core on a Thursday will make downtown parking a headache either way. Tickets

Saturday, September 19, 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Free admission, all ages.

The best free thing happening in the region this month, and worth the drive with kids.

The Oilers hold an open morning skate at Rogers Place at 9:30 a.m., with the rest of the team practising at 10:10 a.m. at the Downtown Community Arena. The locker room sale runs 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Ford Hall with game-used equipment and limited-edition gear. Out on ICE District Plaza there are bouncy castles, balloon artists and face painting, plus photo opportunities with Oilers and Oil Kings alumni and mascots Hunter the Lynx and Louie the Lion.

Saturday, September 19 vs Winnipeg, 6:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26 vs Calgary, 7:00 p.m. Ticketed.

Worth knowing: the Oilers only play four preseason games this year, and only two of them are at home. The NHL expanded the regular season to 84 games and cut exhibition play to match, so this is one of the shortest preseasons in team history. The WHL season opens at home against the Hitmen with a Family Fun Edmonton theme: bouncy castles, face painters, balloon artists and a post-game autograph session with select players. Sunday afternoon start, same building as the Oilers, considerably easier on the wallet. Tickets

The September 12 game is the Labour Day Rematch, the one every Elks fan circles. West Division rivalry, playoff push, and the loudest Commonwealth gets all year. Event page | Tickets

Friday, September 18, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. Free.

Twenty-one years running, and one of the best free family days Edmonton puts on. Three days of music, theatre, dance, street performers, pop-up galleries, artisans and food along 118 Avenue between 90 and 95 Street. Free-flow entry from any direction, all ages, performances rated G or PG.

Two things worth planning for: the Bluegrass Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Main Stage, and the fact that main stage seating is bring-your-own. Pack a blanket and a short chair. There are family beer gardens, and donations go in the colourful tubes on site.

Heads up if you are driving: no parking on the south side of 118 Avenue after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday because of the Elks game. Festival info

Fourth year for this one, held in a big tent at Fan Park so weather is mostly handled. All ages, and every ticket includes one alcoholic drink or two non-alcoholic ones. It is a cashless site, so leave the cash at home. Hosted by improv veteran Donovan Workun.

Saturday, September 12 is a traffic jam of good options. The Fall Classic goes to post at 4:45 p.m., the Elks kick off at 5:00 p.m., and Summer Grillin' runs all day in downtown Leduc. You cannot do all three. Do the festival in the afternoon and pick one evening.

Thursday, September 17 puts two major concerts downtown at once. Foo Fighters at Commonwealth and Cody Johnson at Rogers Place, roughly the same start window. Downtown parking will be brutal. Take transit or book a spot ahead.

Saturday, September 19 is the busiest day of the month. Oilers Fan Day in the morning (free), Kaleido and the Expo all day, Oktoberfest at 5:00 p.m., Oilers preseason at 6:00 p.m. It is genuinely possible to do a free family morning downtown and be home by lunch, which is the version we would recommend.
