This is a weekend of last calls. Saturday is the final Leduc Farmers Market of the season and, an hour up the road, the final u-pick apple window of the year, a two-hour slot at half price. Both are done until 2027.
Friday belongs to Beaumont, where the Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre turns 22 with a free party, and to Century Mile, where live racing returns after a two-week gap.
Devon is quiet. There is nothing at all on the Town calendar between Sept 20 and Sept 29, but the Botanic Garden just north of town is a great place to take in the changing leaves!
And before you drive anywhere in Beaumont: 50 Avenue is now closed between 44 Street and 48 Street.

Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Leduc Protective Service Building, 4119 50 Street. The Leduc RCMP and the City invite residents to meet the first responders who serve the community, see the specialized units and ask questions. LMHA U18AA John Ferguson Evaluation Hockey Series
Running through Monday Sept 28 at the Leduc Recreation Centre. Free to watch, and a good way to spend an hour indoors if the weather turns. Details
Rotary Club Meetings
Mark this one down for next week. The Rotary Club of Nisku Leduc meets every Thursday for our breakfast meeting at 7:00 AM at Red Tail Landing Golf Course. Guests are welcome to attend! Open to everyone!
In Beaumont
The Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre turns 22
Friday, 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., CBYC, 5202 50 Street. Free, with food, music, games and a late-night movie.
The part worth repeating: it is open to members and non-members alike. If you have a teenager who has never been through the doors, this is the lowest-pressure night of the year to send them. Details
That is the whole of Beaumont's public calendar this weekend. Thursday's farmers market was the last of the season.
In Devon
Devon's community calendar has nothing listed between Sept 20 and Sept 29. We checked the Town's own calendar rather than guess.
The pick instead is five kilometres north on Highway 60: the University of Alberta Botanic Garden, open Friday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with last entry an hour before close. Adults $19.75, children 3 to 12 $5.25, family $44.75. The season ends Oct 11, so there are three weekends left including this one. Note the Aga Khan Garden water features are off for maintenance. Pumpkins After Dark opens Friday
Borden Park, Edmonton, about 35 minutes. Over 10,000 hand-carved pumpkins along a one-kilometre lit path with music and effects, running nightly through Oct 31, roughly 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. Timed-entry tickets, and they sell out. Buy on the official site and confirm your slot there. Tickets
The last apples of the year, Saturday only
Attracted2Apples in Fort Saskatchewan, about an hour. The season is over after this: one final opening, Saturday Sept 26, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., everything half price at $1.15/lb, cash only. The idea is to let kids hunt the orchard for the last good apples. 800 trees, pruned short so no ladders. Details
Edmonton Corn Maze
Spruce Grove, about 45 minutes. Ten acres, two connected mazes, plus farm animals, spud guns, mini golf, jumping pillows and a pumpkin patch. Open Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Weekend admission $16 general, $14 youth 4 to 11, under 4 free, and buying online saves a dollar. Hours are weather dependent. Leduc County: a wet year has cost the harvest
The County's Agricultural Service Board has reported that excessive spring and summer rain hit crop yields hard. Ground drainage held up reasonably after the first big rainfall in early June, but the June 20 to 22 event was too much for already saturated land and significant flooding followed. Agricultural Service Manager Aaron Van Beers reports the Blackmud Creek's mapped 100-year flood plain filled nearly to capacity and stayed high for weeks, and another 40 to 50 mm at the end of June waterlogged fields that were just starting to dry.
The damage was uneven. Where fields drained reasonably, crops are good to average. Where they did not, Van Beers says crops are very poor, especially peas and canola, with hilltops fine and low areas drowned out entirely. Hayland and pasture held up better, though constant rain in July and August made it hard to cut and bale on time, degrading hay quality. Overall yields will very likely be below average. Beaumont: the turf field is wearing out faster than it should
Beaumont City Council has directed administration to look into how non-sporting events have contributed to the declining condition of the turf field at the Beaumont Sport and Rec Centre, after the Beaumont Soccer Association raised concerns.
BSA President Whitney Stevens says the field was expected to last about 15 years, and that repeated setup and takedown for non-sporting events has both blocked access for sports groups and caused damage each time the turf is removed, cutting that lifespan significantly. She also flagged the field being unavailable for a week in November, in the middle of the soccer season. Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak tabled a motion asking staff to count how many times the field has been converted in the last five years, what that has cost the city, and what full replacement would cost. Leduc: junior hockey is back
The Leduc Riggers opened their CJHL regular season on Sept 18 at home against the Beverley Warriors, looking to turn the page on a 6-30-2 season that left them last in the East Division. Forward Tanner MacKinnon leads the group again after 29 points in 34 games, with Karter Radtke and Noah Becker both coming off 22-point seasons. Goaltenders Elijah Drader and Cohen Burnett split the preseason work.
The Beaumont Chiefs opened the same night at home against the North Edmonton Red Wings, building on a season that saw them win their qualifying round before falling to eventual champion Sherwood Park in the quarter finals. Read the full article (93.1 The One, Sept 18)

Closures and Changes, before you head out
50 Avenue in Beaumont is CLOSED between 44 Street and 48 Street, from the week of Sept 21, for a sanitary sewer line replacement. A detour is posted. This is the one most likely to catch you out this weekend.
50 Avenue is also down to one lane in front of École Bellevue School and the Beaumont Community Centre for the water feedline project.
Beaumont City Hall and the Public Library share a parking lot, and it is closed from Thursday evening until late Friday afternoon. Both buildings stay open on regular hours, so it is parking only.
Nature Park in Beaumont is under construction, fenced since mid-September. Better news next door: the Milieu Park playground renewal is finished and the playground has reopened.
Black Gold Drive in Leduc has alternating lane closures between 48A Street and 48 Street through the end of September.
Devon FortisAlberta electrical work continues in phases through December, with brief planned outages and a phone call 48 hours ahead for affected residents.
Voyageur Park paid parking ends Sept 30. Until then it is $15 a day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
Devon Community Pool is closed for the season. The BSRC Aquatic Centre in Beaumont reopens Friday Oct 2.
Blue-green algae advisory is still posted at Pigeon Lake. Trails and playground are fine. Keep people and pets out of visible blooms and do not eat whole fish or trimmings from the lake.
